In Memoriam

Dr. Stanley Dysart III

November 1, 1954 – September 23, 2024
With great sorrow, we announce the passing of Dr. Stanley Harrison Dysart III, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and orthopaedic surgeon, who passed away peacefully on September 23, 2024, at the age of 69, with complications from acute myeloid leukemia.

Dr. Dysart was born on November 1, 1954, in Fort Knox, Kentucky, to Stanley Harrison Dysart Jr. and Evelyn McLaughlin Dysart. He attended the University of Georgia, where he met his future wife Marcy, and immediately told his roommate that he’d marry her if he ever had the chance. Stan and Marcy enrolled at the Medical College of Georgia and married at the end of their first year of studies. After Stan completed his residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and a total joint fellowship at Harvard-Brigham and Women’s Hospital, he joined Pinnacle Orthopaedics in Marietta, Georgia, where he built a distinguished career over more than three decades of practice. Post-retirement, he joined Pacira Biosciences as Vice President of Medical Affairs, Orthopaedics, where he contributed to gene therapy research and helped to develop non-opioid therapies.

Stan was known professionally for his exceptionally strong work ethic, technical skill, and extroversion. He said that “ultimately, life is about people,” and his family became accustomed to having patients introduce themselves to provide glowing testimonials of the care they had experienced with Dr. Dysart. Stan achieved the highest level of success in his practice and contributed to his community as a team doctor for local collegiate and professional teams.

Stanley Dysart, MD, was a Greater Cobb County Medical Society member and supporter. In 2010, CCMS created a medical journal that began publication as Scripts. Dr. Dysart served as the editor and contributor to Scripts. He chaired several committees on the Board of Directors and became the Society’s 114th President in 2019.

Dr Dysart’s project was to establish the Cobb County Medical Society Foundation.  The foundation’s mission statement is “We are physicians working together to promote the health care of our community.” His goal was to provide support for medical education and mentorship opportunities, physician leadership training, and support to physicians in areas devastated by natural disasters or at home and physician health.  The foundation was created and is now an established 501(c)(3) charitable foundation Greater Cobb County Medical Society Foundation

Dr. Dysart’s second goal as President was to ensure our members outside Cobb County felt welcome and a part of the Cobb County Medical Society. To that end, he ushered a change in our name to the “Greater Cobb County Medical Society.” Today, we have incorporated the updated name into all our forms and logos.

Dr. Dysart became the KSU athletic department’s orthopedic surgeon in the mid-1990s and served for many years. He chaired the 1999 Football Committee, assigned by Dr. Betty Siegel, and worked to adopt the sport. He was involved in the 2006 Football Study by Turner and Associates, ultimately leading to KSU’s football program. KSU appreciates him as a skilled physician and as a great guy.

Dr. Dysart’s community spirit steered him to produce a regular column in the Marietta Daily Journal. In December 2009, his column was “What you don’t know can kill you.” This column encouraged many to get their annual check-up. In 2013 and 2014, Dr. Dysart won the MDJ’s Cobb Football Friday UPICKEM VIP Contest. Dysart beat out a fellow physician, local business owners, and even a few sports gurus to win. Dr. Dysart said he got some help on his picks from some of his coworkers. “I get plenty of advice on who to pick,” Dysart said. “It’s become a tradition around here. My patients follow my picks in the paper and will offer up advice and fuss at me if I’m behind and not winning. The office staff, other physicians, and even the hospital staff also like to give their advice on who to pick. It’s become a nice debate.”

Stan was equally exceptional as a father and husband. He and Marcy raised six wonderful children together and dedicated themselves to a fun and busy home. Stan made time to teach his kids to play chess, brought them along for trail runs and bike rides, and attended their athletic events. He traveled widely with his children, and in his later years, he gathered the family for annual holidays abroad. He was passionate about education and was quick to provide enthusiastic support for his children’s academic and professional pursuits. His immediate family and friends from all walks of life noticed his gift for making everyone feel special and important as if they could achieve anything they wanted.

Stan found additional time to explore astronomy, hiking, and cycling, but his favorite personal pursuit was traveling the world to craft beautiful landscape photography.

His life was an expression of his deeply held Christian faith. Stan was a follower of Jesus and was confident through his final days that he would have eternal life in His presence. He looked forward to a joyful reunion there with his son David.

Stan will continue to be honored by his loving wife Marcy, his children Matthew, Rebecca, Stephen, Bradley, and Kiersten, and his grandchildren Noemie, Hudson, Henry, Ansley, Emerson, Hazel, and Margot, as well as his siblings Michael Dysart, Kathy Lawson, and John Dysart.
